Old Growth
In the 1970s George Goodwin, a master carpenter and homebuilder,
discovered the virgin quality, rich red patina and amazing
grains of "underwater" antique heart pine and the rest is
history. Goodwin Heart Pine Company has carved its unique
niche by reclaiming and milling some of the finest antique
wood flooring in the world. Amazingly enough, this treasure
is available at reasonable prices and is ideal for numerous
projects - both traditional and contemporary.
Specifications
Overview
There currently are about 20 products of all price ranges
available. We occasionally have the opportunity to offer other
fine woods and grades so be sure to ask "what’s new." (And
we often can match competitor's prices too).
In addition, because we have the logs we can provide wider
widths, longer lengths and wood for custom projects.
| There are generally three grains
to choose from: |
 |
SELECT grain is achieved
by sawing flat through the log and results in a blend
of both arching grain pattern and vertical grain in planks
up to 10 inches wide (wider widths available for lumber).
Goodwin provides a high percentage of vertical grain -
or about 75 to 85 percent in wide "plain sawn" projects.
|
 |
VERTICAL grain is a pinstriped
pattern achieved along the full length of the board by
using the quarter sawing process (a more intricate sawing
method that incurs more waste). Goodwin provides 100%
vertical grain, with growth rings no more than 45 degrees
perpendicular from the face. |
 |
CURLY grain is an extremely
rare, natural burled grain. This unique and luminous grain
pattern is found in about one out of every 300-400 logs.
It is perfect for a stunning conversation piece inlays
on flooring and cabinetry, or other specialty projects.
