Homeowners Adding More Inlay Designs To Their Wood Floors
Hardwood floors continue to grow in popularity, but this
year’s top wood floor winner says consumers increasingly
are adding intricate inlay designs to their foyers and living
areas.
“Simple inlay designs have been mainstream for several
years, but we are seeing a call for more complex inlays as
a focal point in custom homes and renovations,” said
George Goodwin, president of Goodwin Heart Pine Company. Goodwin
Heart Pine recently earned the prestigious “Designers
Choice Wood Floor 2002” award at the National Wood Flooring
Association’s national convention.
“Some of these installations are amazing works of art,”
said Goodwin. “We get calls all the time for special
pieces of wood that craftsmen intend to use in elaborate designs.”
The national award floor featured a variety of Goodwin Heart
Pine’s luxury antique reclaimed woods such as River-Recovered®
Heart Pine, Heart Cypress and Wild Black Cherry. The project,
directed by DM Hardwoods Designs of Mission Viejo, CA, also
used a variety of exotic woods as accent pieces.
More than 1000 pieces of wood were hand-cut to produce an
intricate eight-foot design of a Victorian compass rose medallion.
An Angled border of River-Recovered® Heart Pine surrounds
the artwork to form a 16 x 20-foot floor.
Interior designers judged the competition based on beauty,
complexity and originality. The award joins others previously
received by Goodwin including the Floor of the Year for 2000,
1999 and 1997.
